We have some exciting news to pass along to you. Beginning with the 09-10 school year, we will be a site for a Navy Junior Reserve Officers Training Corps or NJROTC. NJROTC is a leadership program designed to give students a head start on a career in the military, possibly the naval academy. It helps young people to develop the self-discipline, self-confidence, and leadership skills necessary to meet life’s challenges. The curriculum and instructional activities are designed to develop leadership ability regardless of career path.
The naval science curriculum includes subjects such as leadership, naval history, citizenship, astronomy, oceanography, meteorology, naval ships and aircraft, seamanship, radar and sonar electronics, navigation, and sea power. NJROTC is a 3 to 4 year program, but we will not turn away an interested junior or senior student. Even though they might not receive all of the training involved, they would still be one step ahead of other students interested in the Naval Academy or a collegiate ROTC program who have never had NJROTC.
There are a minimum of 180 class periods per year of formal classroom training, supplemented by training cruises aboard ships, orientation visits and field trips to various naval facilities to enhance classroom studies. Shortly, we will send out a brochure and information on NJROTC to all incoming 9th grade students, but our counseling and guidance department has information for all current Stafford High School Students.
This past fall, we began the Stafford Academy for Technology. Our district received a grant from the National Governor's Association Center for best practices to improve science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) education. Our planning was aligned with emerging job opportunities for the 21st century.
The STAT Academy is an interdisciplinary course of study bringing science, technology, English and mathematics together across the curriculum. This academy is open to rising 9th graders on an application and space-available basis and to 10th graders who have taken the first technology/engineering course in the sequence.
Again, please know that your are welcome at Stafford High School. I look forward to meeting you. Please don't hesitate to contact me if you have any questions, suggestions or concerns.
Sincerely,
Joseph Lewis,
Principal
